Ekalaka, Montana - 12" x 9"

While filming Prehistoric Road Trip I was lucky to get to spend time in parts of the country that feel closest to me personally. One of those places was around the area of Ekalaka, Montana. It has to be one of the most remote areas of the United States, being more than a 2-hour drive from any major airport. It’s where my great-grandparents settled in the early 1900s, and where my Grandmother was born and raised. She lived out here with a pet magpie, surrounded by the quiet of being in another world.

I never got a chance to talk with my Grandmother more about her experience growing up near Ekalaka, but even being in the area made me feel closer to her memory. This painting was created as a small study for a larger work but I loved it so much as-is, I’ve used it as a source of inspiration for other pieces.
